How I healed my pelvic organ prolapse
I came to Pilates out of curiosity, I came to learn Hypopressives out of necessity.
I woke up one morning and felt something wrong. I could feel that something worrying had happened to me… the signs I noticed were put down on my ever expanding list of perimenopause symptoms such as heaviness, backache, a pulling feeling in my lower stomach, an unexpected need for the loo at night. It started affecting my life and my work as I was gradually feeling less confident in engaging in my usual activities.
After two difficult deliveries in my late 20s, and evaporating oestrogen in my 40s, there I was, the proud owner of a POP. Not the fizzy drink, the wandering pelvic organ prolapse kind. Now you may ask, how does a Pilates teacher (a rehabilitation specialist to boot!) end up with a condition like this? Don’t you exercise your abdominals daily?
Whilst Pilates helped me maintain a strong and healthy body, I didn’t have all the tools to cover such a complex and misunderstood condition.
This is when I had to delve into pelvic floor anatomy, injuries and scarring, hormonal changes, hyper mobility and breathing, I had found all the pieces of the puzzle, but surely there had to be more than just the Kegel and pelvic floor exercises I was given, not to mention possible medical interventions.
I stumbled upon Hypopressives training trawling the internet and there it was, the missing link to my beloved Pilates…
The Hypopressive method is a very little known discipline that was originally devised in the 80s by a Belgian gynaecologist Marcel Caufriez to help post-natal patients.
It is a revolutionary workout technique which will activate involuntary fibres in the pelvic floor and deep abdominals through a breathing pattern. It can be done in as little as a few minutes a day!
This was the key which was going to heal, strengthen and support me for the rest of my life.
Within a few weeks, I felt my symptoms lessen or disappear. Was it too good to be true? Was it a fluke? Overtime, I combined it with Pilates creating a unique method. I felt confident resuming my dance classes, attempting the more advanced Pilates exercises I had been avoiding, lifting weight without fear.
My mood started improving (injury can dominate your everyday!), my stamina throughout the day had returned, my waistline became a lot more defined, sex suddenly felt better than ever…
What woman wouldn’t want that?
